13 PhD-Stellen
The EU-funded ALMOA doctoral network is offering 13 exciting PhD positions in the fields of applied mathematics, optimization, and computer science.
HYPATIA is the equal opportunities network of the Department of Mathematics/Computer Science. Our aim is to promote and network young female scientists and to jointly create a scientific environment that is more diverse, open and family-friendly.
Although the proportion of female students in mathematics is initially high, it decreases significantly over the course of an academic career - particularly at doctoral and professorial level. HYPATIA aims to make these developments visible and actively contribute to improvements.
HYPATIA is aimed at all members of the department - regardless of gender. In particular, we want to support female students, doctoral candidates and postdocs in finding their place in the mathematical community and finding their own path in science.our goal is not a separate space, but a common one: we want to promote understanding, enable dialog and strengthen diversity in the mathematical community.

We present "PromoWie", the brochure that has been developed over the past few months by the Hypatia Network for Gender Equality at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The project was financed by the financial fund for the implementation of the University of Cologne's statutory equal opportunities mandate.
The aim of the brochure is to give students, especially female students, a clear and accessible insight into the path to a doctorate and everyday life as a doctoral student. In addition to basic information on organizational aspects, the brochure contains personal experience reports and interviews with doctoral candidates from our department and beyond.
With PromoWie, we want to offer orientation, reduce inhibitions and help to make diverse perspectives on doctoral studies visible - especially for students who have had less contact with the topic of "doing a doctorate" so far.

HYPATIA-Science is an initiative to promote young female scientists at the Department of Mathematics/Computer Science. Research projects are funded for a period of six months.
HYPATIA organizes regular events followed by networking in a relaxed atmosphere, to which all students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers are warmly invited. These events take place at least once a year and promote exchange between the various “career stages.”
At least once per semester, the department finances guest lectures by scientists who are invited by the networkers to give scientific presentations.
Each year, the department awards two HYPATIA research travel fellowships (one to a female applicant and one to a male applicant) for doctoral and postdoctoral students, each worth up to €1,000 per year. The research travel fellowships are awarded by a review committee appointed by the network, in which one professor from each research area is represented. In addition, the HYPATIA department provides financial support of up to €500 per year to enable the best master's students in mathematics and business mathematics to participate in student conferences.
With the support of the department, HYPATIA establishes contacts with industrial companies and research institutions by issuing invitations to introductory meetings or inviting alumni to share their experiences at least once per semester.
The best female BSc students in mathematics and business mathematics are supported by a mentoring program during the last third of their studies.
More information about the mentoring program for female bachelor's students can be found here.
